Have any of the IR crew members been in plays? If so, what character(s) did you play? (You guys are all great voice actors and singers!)
Moon: I've been in a bunch of highschool plays, and two college plays so far
Highschool:'Addams Family' - Fester'The Nerd' - Rick Steadman'Reach' - Highschooler'Shrek the Musical' - Donkey'Urinetown' - Bobby Strong'Addams Family' - Lucas Beineke'Rumours' - swing for all the men'Mary Poppins' - Various ensemble but also Ms. Andrew
College:'Ghost Ship (a national award winning play we created from the ground up here at the college)' - Mary Whalen Sailor & Carlotta May Pirate'Charlotte's Web (I'm currently in this one)' - Gander the Goose
Alex: I got my start in theater so
Princess Bride - FezzikDark Crystal - ChamberlainRobin Hood - Sheriff of NottinghamCharlie and the Chocolate Factory - Grandpa JoeA Midsummer Night's Dream - OberonAnd Then There Were None - Mr. RogersRENT - Homeless Man #1 (also Mrs Jefferson one performance by accident)A Christmas Carol - ScroogeTreasure Island - Long John SilverBeauty and the Beast - BeastArsenic and Old Lace - Reverend Harper, Mr. Gibbs, Lt. these aren't in order and i'm not counting school plays personally bc they were all in primary school + mostly religious. except for the time i played a rapping anaconda in my last year about an environmental rainforest playi've probably forgotten some but w/e
Kristen: Damn lookit ya'll with a history.
All I've got is I was Amarylis in a school wide production of The Music Man and my friend who was always upstaging me due to being a bit smarter was the kid with a lisp. He accused me of relishing my single scene where I made fun of him and he was 100% correct I was a very spiteful fourth grader.
Juno: Les Mis - pit pianistCatch Me If You Can - pit pianist
Jojo: I was always ensemble :c I've never been a character
Scott: You're not alone.
Atwas: Ensemble is just as important as the rest of the cast, just saying.
Phill: Alice in wonderland- the white rabbitBeauty and the beast- the book man and a spoon
Phill: Never actually got to perform the white rabbit role in public tho. This was about the time when my teachers found out i was not devout catholic and decided I wasn't fit for the role
Scott: Ah, the ever fun director's bias.
Phill: Mmmhmm
Kristen: God that's such bullshit
Jojo: haaa My drama teacher was one who had favorites. and if you weren't one of his favorites, there was a slim to none chance that you're getting in a play
Alex: My high school did precasting so most of my roles were outside of school. This is hilariously common in high school.
Phill: Oh big time. Big reason I hated drama and stuff for YEARS
Xander: Elementary School:The Music Man Jr. - Harold Hill
Middle School:High School Musical - MC / JamesSeussical the Musical - Cadet / Yertle the TurtleWilly Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Jr. - Mike Teevee
High School:You Can’t Take it With You - Mr. DePinnaOphelia - ThespianAlmost, Maine - Chad / DaveLittle Shop of Horrors - Orin Scrivello, DDSThe Wizard of Oz - Snowman / Emerald City GuardThe Musical Comedy Murders of the 1940s - Patrick O’Riley Lend Me a Tenor - Tito Mirelli

Jojo: we found a favorite
Xander: No, my school’s teacher just wasn’t biased. They valued actually auditioning and earning the part.
Jojo: rage
Atwas: Once Upon a Mattress - The Jester
Bye Bye Birdie - EnsemblePicnic - RosemaryComedy of Errors - Dromio of SyracuseClue: The Musical - Mrs. WhiteDames at Sea - JoanLaramie Project - Ensemble/Aaron MckinneyQuilters - EnsembleAgnes of God - Dr. LivingstoneHonk! - Maureen/Ensemble

Hi! My name’s Shreya, I’m Indian-American and you can find me at @doilookgreatiam (she/her if you want to reply). I’ve loved musicals since the 7th grade, when my piano teacher, Deb (pictured on the right), started making me CDs of different musical soundtracks. She’s the one who really got me into musicals, although I suppose watching Bollywood/Tollywood movies as a kid helped. I loved singing as a kid, and I was in my school’s chorus, so Deb encouraged me to audition for my middle school’s annual musical. I ended up in the ensemble in Willy Wonka Jr., and as a Wickersham sister in Suessical Jr. in 8th grade.
The picture up above is me in the 9th grade, as a member of the ensemble in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (excuse the snowman pajamas, I was still in costume). This is around the time when my parents were pressuring me to choose a career path in health care, as many Indian parents do. I loved performing so much that some very small part of me thought that perhaps I could be a performer, but that thought faded quickly. I learned years later from Deb, who I am still very good friends with, that my mom had actually confronted her before a piano lesson and asked her not to encourage me to be an actress, which looking back, kind of stings. I understand why she did it, but I think she just wasn’t sure that an Indian-American girl could end up on Broadway.
As a sophomore in college, I’m no longer a performer (and I no longer look like I did in that picture thank goodness), but I’m still a HUGE fan of musicals! I’ve seen 4 Broadway musicals, but no one in the cast has ever looked like me, which I’ve learned to come to terms with. Sometimes I think about what my dream role would be, and I realize that a lot of roles require not being Indian, but what can you do, right? But after following this blog, I found out that there’s an Indian woman in the Great Comet cast (Shoba Narayan) and every time I think about her, or the fact that she’s the swing for a lead and titular role, I want to sob with joy. I’m glad Asian-Americans are getting more representation, on Broadway and elsewhere, and I’m so happy to say that I’ll be seeing Great Comet (and my girl Shoba) in June with Deb! Even if I’m not the Indian-American girl on Broadway, I’m glad that Shoba is, and that maybe she’s inspiring more young people to love musicals and performing.
